The problem

Stretch film is bought by gauge and by price per roll, and neither of those is the property that keeps a load on its pallet. Gauge measures thickness. What actually holds the load together is containment force — the pressure the film exerts against the load, concentrated at the corners, where it is highest and where under-specified film fails first.

Thickness and holding power are not the same property and do not move together. Pre-stretch, resin quality and how the wrapper is programmed all change what a given film delivers, which is why a thicker film can hold a load less well than a thinner one. That is the whole reason buying on gauge is buying the wrong variable: it is a number that is easy to compare and does not answer the question.

The decisive fact about containment force is not what it should be — it is that it is **measurable**. It is read off a wrapped load with a gauge, in a few seconds, on the dock. So the property that determines whether the load survives is available to anyone who wants it, which turns the whole subject into three questions with answers: does this operation have a number, when was it last taken, and is the term familiar to the people doing the wrapping.

This card deliberately states no target. A range would be a machine and product performance figure, it would vary by load, by film and by equipment, and offering one would answer from outside the building the exact question that has to be answered inside it. Whether this operation knows its own number, and whether anyone has ever measured it, is the finding — and it is not a finding a supplier can supply.

The failure that follows is quiet in the way that matters. A facility buying on roll price believes it is buying cheap film, and the consequence arrives as damage — in another budget, on another schedule, investigated by other people. The film line and the damage line sit in different columns and nobody joins them, so the saving stays visible and the cost stays anonymous.

Why it costs

Film is a rounding error next to what fails around it. A load that shifts in transit costs the product, the freight, the claim processing, the customer relationship, and — with retail and distribution customers — the chargeback.

The chargeback is worth separating because it is contractual rather than incidental. A receiver who sets conditions for how loads arrive can charge against them, and a shipper who has never measured containment cannot say whether they are meeting conditions they agreed to.

Hand wrapping is where the cost is least visible and most personal. Whether the film it consumes is recorded anywhere is worth asking, and so is whether anyone has compared it with the machine-wrapped equivalent. It delivers containment that varies with whoever is doing it, and spends labor at the point in the day when labor is scarcest — and because it looks like work rather than like a cost, it survives.

Then the arithmetic that reframes the whole conversation, which needs no figures to state: film bought by the roll is priced per roll, and film consumed is consumed per load. Those two are separated by how far the film stretches and how the machine is set, so the cheaper roll and the cheaper load can be different products — and which is which here is answerable only from this operation's own consumption. A facility comparing roll prices is comparing the wrong denominator; the conversion is the question worth asking.

The decision that holds up is a measurement rather than a specification: what is the containment force on the loads leaving today, has anyone ever put a gauge on one, what does the wrapper's program actually deliver, and what does a load cost per wrap rather than per roll. If the first question produces a blank, that is the finding, and everything else in this card is downstream of it.

What a rep can see on a walkthrough, without asking a question

  • Film broken or webbing into a rope at the pallet corners
  • Arriving pallets with torn film, or loads visibly leaning
  • Operators adding extra revolutions by hand after the machine cycle ends
  • No wraps tying the bottom of the load to the pallet itself
  • Hand wrapping alongside a wrapper that is idle
  • A stretch wrapper running one program for visibly different load types
  • Part-used film rolls accumulating at the wrap station
  • No containment force gauge anywhere in the packing or shipping area
  • Loads re-wrapped by hand after coming off the machine
  • Film applied only to the upper part of the load
  • Torn or crushed corners on loads staged for dispatch
  • Corner boards present on some loads and not on comparable ones

How to use these: None of these establishes that the film is wrong, that the load is unsafe, or what any load's containment force actually is. Containment force is measured on the wrapped load with a gauge, not judged by eye and not inferred from what the film costs — so a rep must not state a target, a range, or a pre-stretch figure for any load or any machine. Those are machine and product performance numbers and they answer the question this card exists to raise. Do not tell a customer their damage rate; that is theirs to produce. A leaning pallet might have been struck in the yard, and a hand-wrapped load might be the one exception on a machine-wrapped line. What the cues do establish is whether containment is being managed as a measured property or as a purchase. Ask what their containment force is and watch what happens next.
